How many times have you said…..“I’m starting my diet on Monday.”
Then on Sunday night you find out some girlfriends planned a dinner on Tuesday night or you found out about a social event happening on Thursday night of that week, and you say….“Why start my diet this Monday if I can’t stay on it all week? I’ll start next Monday.”
Go ahead….count how many times you have found an excuse to delay the start of the diet.
Now, how many years have you started out on January 1st saying….“This is the year I’m going to take that 20 pounds off and keep it off.”
Then the following January 1st you say….“No, really! THIS is the year I’m taking off that 25 pounds and keeping it off.” (Yes, now it’s 25 pounds.)
Not following through on our plan to start our weight loss project is just the beginning of the Domino Effect. We not only are disappointed in ourselves, but we can also experience shame, blame, anger and so many other emotions.
We hold onto these emotions for a good reason and it’s not just because we feel like we have failed again. These very familiar feelings can go way back to our childhood, but we don’t put a connection to it. Our subconscious works quite hard at protecting us from revisiting those comments or events that act as the birthplace of those very familiar feelings of shame, blame, embarrassment, never good enough feelings.
